SCOTT, ABSALOM FAMILY

Absalom Scott and his descendants show perfectly the mobility of Kentuckians during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

According to family tradition, Absalom Scott came from Virginia. He was born January 6, 1776. He is said to have had brothers James and Samuel, and a sister Eliza. The first record of "Absolem" Scott is a land survey made on "Kittle" Creek for 200 acres of second-rate land made on April 1, 1799, having been entered by him on August 27, 1798, in Green County. March 28, 1806, he bought 85 ½ acres of land on the north side of Cumberland River across from the mouth of Goose Creek, for 171 pounds current money of Kentucky. On September 17, 1807, he had 11 acres of land surveyed on the south side of the river, just below the mouth of Goose Creek, where Scott's Ferry (which he had established by November 13, 1809) was until it ceased about 1960.

Like many other early settlers, Absalom could not write his name. Yet he was able to become a prosperous man, owning several hundred acres of land in Swan Pond Bottom, which then became known as Scotts' Bottom. He also owned ten slaves at his death on June 16, 1847. He was buried on his farm in Scotts' Bottom. His was probably the first grave in the cemetery, on the farm now owned by Grady Cope. A slender tombstone, barely legible, marks his grave.

On May 21, 1806, Absalom married Philipina Stanfield, daughter of John and Philipina Jones Stanfield, who lived on Otter Creek. They had eleven children: Maranda (Claywell), b. October 18, 1807; George W., b. Sept. 27, 1809; James B., b. March 30, 1812; John Stanfield, b. Feb. 6, 1815; William I., b. May 1, 1817; Alvary H., b. May 25, 1819; Valentine, b. May 14, 1831; Levesta Anne (Parmley), b. May 19, 1823; Nancy T. (Walthall), b. June 20, 1825; Robert E., b. July 6, 1827; and Thomas M.,b. March 6. 1829.

No descendant of Absalom by the name of Scott is in Kentucky today, but several descendants are here who are related through his daughters and granddaughters. By family tradition, James B., William I., and Alvary H. went to Missouri, and Thomas M. to Texas and Oklahoma. George W., John S., Valentine, and Robert E. lived in Scotts' Bottom and are buried there. George W.'s descendants went to Missouri; Valentine's descendants went to Eddyville, Kentucky; Nashville, Tennessee; and other places. Robert E. was not married.

John Stanfield Scott married Jane Hayden. They lived in Scott's Bottom and reared John Richard, Absalom Taylor, James D., Sidney, Philipina (Bow), and at least one other daughter.

Of John Stanfield Scott's children, Absalom Taylor, James D. and Sidney left the state, while the others remained in Cumberland County. Absalom Taylor married Justanie Bow, went to Whitewright, Texas, and reared a family of thirteen. Thus, there are probably more Scott descendants in Texas than anywhere else today. James D. went to Grayson County, Texas. Sidney went to Anderson, Missouri.

John Richard married Martha Ann Huff and reared a family in Scotts' Bottom. All of John Richard's family except one daughter are buried ther
John Stanfield Scott's daughter Philipina married Isaac Bow and lived on Bear Creek where they reared a large family. Many of Philipina's descendants remain scattered in Kentucky.

John Stanfield Scott's other daughter married a Baker.

The Absalom Scott family reflects human mobility through 200 years.
