"Camp Vance was located in Burke Co., NC, six miles outside Morganton. It was established as a training facility in 1861. By 1864 all the soldiers trained there were the conscripted.(Confederate Conscription Act passed 17 February 1864)."

"Most of the records were burned during a surprise raid on the camp by the Union Col. George W. Kirk, with about 130 men, out of east Tennessee, on 28 June 1864."
